Constructing sidewalks and pathways in Africa are expensive. Although these remain long term goals, near-term and less expensive but effective safety solutions for pedestrian and cyclists are our focus. We will work with NGOs and local government to implement cost effective solutions and provide public education that will help make walking and cycling safe and sustainable for people to use in Zambia and elsewhere in southern Africa.

Your generous donation will help us provide essential resources and training for safer roads in Zambia. Every contribution counts, whether large or small. Thank you for making a difference for safety in Africa!

Most Zambians walk or cycle to work, schools and other destinations. Much of this happens at night or during periods of limited visibility. In Zambia, like many other parts of Africa, roadway facilities that Americans take for granted such as sidewalks, street lights, functioning traffic signals, and roadway crosswalks do not exist. These facilities are distant improvements due to the expenses associated with their construction! So, until these improvements can be realized, use of reflective clothing and other ways of improving visibility, along with safe practices public education, can provide immediate and cost-effective solutions.

Schools are a focal point for road safety training for youth and students in Zambia! Many Zambian schools in urban areas are located along busy roadways. With the lack of sidewalks and signalized or painted crosswalks, safety for students around schools is a necessity. Road Safe in Africa intends to degenerate and donate funds that will support ZRST efforts to improve safety through the addition of high visibility crosswalks, distribution of reflective vests and other items, and most important, training students, parents, teachers, and school staff on how to improve road safety around schools.
A school road improvement & training package costs between $2,000 to $5,000 USD to paint or refresh cross walks, add road crossing flags, purchase vests and other reflective items for students to use, print and distribute safety information and conduct instructional trainings for students and their parents and teachers and school staff.

Additionally, due to the added cost of importing reflectors that are made outside of Zambia, Road Safe in Africa intends to set up fabrication of reflective vests and over shoulder belts. Working with Zambia Road Safety Trust, RSIA funds will subsidize a women-operated collective to fabricate reflective items for distribution. The objective of this is twofold - First, to create a local source of reflective items that avoids importation costs. Second, to create employment and income generating opportunities for women.

Bart has partnered as an expert advisor (on a volunteer, non paid basis) with the Zambia Road Safety Trust (ZRST) to help their efforts to make roadway conditions safer.

Road Safe in Africa partners with Zambia Road Safety Trust to implement and expand road safety projects throughou Zambia. ZRST is Zambia’s and southern Africa’s leading NGO promoting road safety and sustainable transportation. ZRST’s vision is to match and exceed international road safety excellence to help free Zambia’s roads from deaths and injuries.
Donations are collected using a GoFundMe account. GoFundMe does not support donation accounts set up in Africa. Your donation will go into a U.S. bank account managed by RSIA and then wired directly to a ZRST bank account for beneficial use in the ways described here.
